📈 DAILY MARKETS

🏡 HOME SALES

Existing home sales fell a whopping 5.9% in March, the largest monthly decline since 2022, and were down 2.4% year-over-year. Mortgage applications fell by 12.7% in the past week, suggesting that April’s numbers will not show any improvement. Meanwhile, median home prices rose by 1.3% monthly and 2.7% year-over-year.

➨ TAKEAWAY: The housing market remains in a slump, and the recent rise in mortgage rates makes it likely that the sluggishness will continue. There had been hopes of a turnaround after February’s numbers showed an uptick heading into the usually-busy spring season, but economic uncertainty has made buyers hesitant to jump in. However, sales of new single-family homes rose in March, primarily in the $300,000 range, meaning that there is buying demand, just at a lower price point.

🏀 KOBE JERSEY

(Sotheby’s)

A game-used Kobe Bryant jersey from his rookie season that was photo-matched to his NBA debut sold for $7 million at Sotheby’s, a new record for any Bryant memorabilia and the fourth most expensive jersey ever sold. Among NBA memorabilia, it trails only a Michael Jordan jersey that sold for $10.1 million in 2022.

➨ TAKEAWAY: While there had been hope that this jersey could sell for more than $10 million and set a new record, the result is still a strong one. Since his untimely death in 2020, the market for Kobe memorabilia has surpassed any NBA player besides Jordan. Sotheby’s head of modern collectibles Brahm Wachter said, “over the last 18 months…the demand for Kobe, the rate of growth, I think is actually outpacing Jordan.”
